Perceived Obligations

Think about all the obligations you have in life that truly don’t matter. What are your reasons for doing these things? What would life be like if you opted out of doing them? In today’s episode, I’m talking all about perceived obligations and why sometimes it’s okay to say no to them!

Real Problems vs. Perceived Problems

Back in December, I had a huge dilemma over sending holiday cards. It felt like a problem at the time. But was it a real problem or a perceived problem?

A perceived problem is not an actual problem, but it’s something that can weigh on our minds and take up space in our brains. It can keep us from moving forward. Or keep us stuck. Or keep us in a cycle of doing shit we don’t want to do.

When we have actual problems things like sending a holiday card can spin in our brains and we make them into a problem when they really aren’t. We do this to distract from the issues that really are the problems. We hyperfocus on the things that keep us stuck and uncomfortable.

Like Your Reason

I evaluated my thoughts about the holiday card. Why did I not want to do them? I wrote out all the reasons and all the things I had going on in my life. I quickly realized I only wanted to send them out because everyone else was doing it and I felt like I had to.

Both of those are thoughts and the reasons weren’t good enough for me to actually go through with it. I chose to not send them and instantly felt free.

There are enough things I do in my life that I don’t want to do. However,  I do them because my reasons are good enough. Things like invoicing clients, working out, and cooking dinner. Many times I don’t WANT to do these things but I do them because I like my reason.

Opting Out

If you don’t like your reason for doing something then feel free to opt out!

Think about all of the things we feel like we have to do that we could opt out of. We think we need to be a certain size, have a certain number of social media followers, get our nails and brows done, etc. What if we opted out? What if some of these things weren’t even on our list?

Think about all the things you could opt out of. You could relieve so much stress. You could be free and present to enjoy life. You could use that energy for so many other things.

Life will always throw us shit that is stressful, scary, or sad, but what if we opted out of everything that is optional?

Set yourself free!
